April Fool's Day 2018, my first day of official retirement.

While I've experimented with retirement-like phases in my life, today is the first time I have not been an employee of any company since the day I graduated Vanderbilt June 1, 1969, took off my cap and gown, loaded up my old Jag, and drove to Carrollton, Georgia to start my employed life as an electrical engineer at Southwire. I started this blog to journal my experience in this new adventure, often referred to as retirement.

I made the decision to let my baby, Amplion Clinical Communications, (formerly Dalcon), go because it was time for it to fly completely on its own, with a talented team under the leadership of a strong board and CEO, Frank Grant. I remain on the board there and a committed investor and as positive as ever that it serves a critical need for patients in hospitals.

After 45 years together, with me at an office every day, Estelle and I are excited about the new space in our lives this opens up. We've lived our lives in the reality that time is our most precious resource and now we have more options in how best to spend it together. We'll try to make the most of it.

Estelle and many of our friends and family have preceded me in this new phase of life journey and I thought this blog might be a fun way to share my new adventure with you all as well as those yet to take the step.

  6. Congratulations Dave!
One thing I missed about working was looking forward to the weekend when I could do all my DIY home improvement projects. Now I'm a full time DIYer and loving it!

    1. Thanks Wild Bill, good to hear from you. I remember seeing all the work you've done on the ranch in TX. Yes, I agree, I always felt like I had so little time I had to let others do the home projects. Tomorrow I'm building a water diversion wall in the back yard and the next day replacing a busted lower front bumper shield on my Prius. Figure those will save me about $2000! Thank goodness for google search!

  7. David, Theresa and I are so happy for you. We do share some concern that Estelle's freedom will be compromised. We are looking forward to full retirement at the end of August. Need more dinners and concerts. Best of love to both of you.
